What is AEO?
AEO (answer engine optimization) is the work of making your business easy for AI tools like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Gemini to find, trust and name when someone asks for a recommendation.
Traditional search gives a customer ten blue links and lets them choose. An answer engine reads those sources for the customer and replies with a short answer — often two to five businesses, sometimes one.
AEO is about being one of the names in that answer, and being described correctly when you are. The "meaning" of AEO in plain terms: you stop optimizing only for a ranking position and start optimizing for a mention.
You will also see the same work called GEO (generative engine optimization), LLM SEO or AI SEO. The labels differ; the goal is identical.
What counts as an answer engine?
An answer engine is any tool that replies to a question with a written or spoken answer instead of a list of links — ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and voice assistants.
The ones that matter most for a local service business today:
- ChatGPT — the most-used AI tool for local recommendations. It can search the web live, and since March 31, 2026 it offers optional, off-by-default precise location sharing for more localized "near me" results.
- Google AI Overviews — the AI summary at the top of many Google results pages.
- Google AI Mode — Google's conversational search tab. Google is testing AI Overviews that expand straight into AI Mode, which blurs the line between the two.
- Gemini — Google's standalone assistant, on the web and on Android phones.
- Perplexity — a search-first AI tool that shows numbered citations for every claim.
- Microsoft Copilot — built on Bing's index, and present in Windows, Edge and Office.
- Voice assistants — Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant read out a single answer, which makes being the named business even more valuable.
They run on different models, but most share one habit for local questions: they search an index first, then write the answer from what they retrieved. That shared habit is what AEO works on.
Why does AEO matter for a local business now?
Nearly half of US consumers now use AI tools to find local businesses, and when Google shows an AI summary, people click the regular results about half as often.
The adoption jump happened in one year. BrightLocal's 2026 survey of 1,002 US adults found that 45% of consumers use AI tools for local business recommendations, up from 6% the year before. ChatGPT is the most-used tool among them (31% of AI users), with Google AI Mode at 23%.
Clicks are shrinking where AI answers appear. Pew Research Center found that when a Google AI summary appeared, users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, versus 15% when it did not. They clicked a link inside the summary in just 1% of visits. In March 2025, 18% of the Google searches Pew studied produced an AI summary.
Put those together and the pattern is clear: more of the decision happens inside the answer, and fewer people scroll to your listing.
The good news for businesses that do things right: people still verify. BrightLocal found 88% of AI users fact-check what the AI tells them, and 97% double-check against real reviews. A recommendation gets you on the shortlist; your reviews and website close the deal.
Interest in the term itself is climbing fast. In Google Keyword Planner data Media Spearhead pulled for September 2025 to August 2026, US searches for "what is answer engine optimization" rose from about 210 to 2,400 a month, and "what is aeo" averaged 4,400.
We see it on our own phones, too. Many of the business owners who call Media Spearhead now say an AI assistant recommended us, and AI has become our biggest source of new clients.
How do answer engines choose which businesses to cite?
Answer engines retrieve pages from a search index, then favor businesses whose facts are consistent across sources, whose reviews are strong, whose pages answer the question directly, and who are mentioned by trusted third-party sites.
No engine publishes its ranking formula. But the inputs are visible if you look at what they cite. Six factors show up again and again.
1. Retrieval from a search index
For local questions, AI tools usually search before they answer. ChatGPT has been observed running Bing searches for local queries, Copilot uses Bing, and Google AI Overviews use Google's own index. If a page is not crawlable and indexed, it cannot be cited.
2. Consistent entity facts
Your "entity" is the set of facts that define your business: name, address, phone, hours, service area, services, licenses. When your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Yelp, BBB and Angi all agree, an engine can state those facts with confidence. When they conflict, it hedges or picks someone else.
3. Reviews
Review volume, recency and what reviewers actually say feed directly into how AI tools describe a business. "Showed up in an hour on a Sunday" is the kind of detail that ends up in an answer. Reviews must be real: the FTC's final rule banning fake reviews and testimonials took effect in 2024.
4. Answer-shaped content
Engines lift sentences they can quote. A service page that opens with "We repair and replace residential water heaters in Duval and St. Johns counties, with same-day service most weekdays" is easier to cite than one that opens with a slogan.
5. Structured data
Schema markup (LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage, Review) labels your facts in a format machines read without guessing. It does not force a citation, but it removes ambiguity about who you are and what you do.
6. Third-party mentions
Answer engines lean heavily on what other sites say about you. An analysis by Cheers of 70,723 ChatGPT citations across 100 US and Canadian metros shows how the sources split:
| Source type ChatGPT cited | Share of citations |
|---|---|
| Business websites | 48.8% |
| Directories and review platforms (Angi, BBB, Yelp and similar) | 44.7% |
| Social and forums (Reddit, Facebook, Nextdoor) | 4.3% |
| Media and vendor sites | 2.0% |
| google.com | 0.2% |
Two takeaways. Your own website is roughly half the battle, and directories are nearly the other half. And the same study notes that public evidence does not establish that ChatGPT reads Google Business Profile directly — so a strong Google profile alone does not cover ChatGPT.
How is AEO different from SEO?
SEO earns you a ranking on a results page; AEO earns you a mention inside an AI answer — and because answer engines retrieve from search indexes, good SEO is the foundation AEO builds on.
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank on the results page | Be named and cited in the answer |
| Unit of success | Position and clicks | Mentions, citations and accuracy |
| Main surfaces | Google and Bing results | ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot |
| Off-site weight | Links | Links plus directories, reviews and forum mentions |
Most of the technical groundwork overlaps: crawlable pages, fast load times, clear site structure. The difference is emphasis. AEO puts more weight on quotable answers, entity consistency and your footprint on sites you do not own. The full comparison is in our AEO vs SEO guide, and our SEO services cover the foundation.
What does AEO work actually involve?
AEO work means opening your site to AI crawlers, fixing your business facts everywhere they appear, rewriting key pages to answer questions directly, adding schema, earning reviews and mentions, and tracking AI answers monthly.
It is less mysterious than the name suggests. A typical program for a local service business covers six workstreams.
- Crawler access. Check that robots.txt and your firewall allow the bots that feed AI answers: OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search) and ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User, Claude-SearchBot and Claude-User, Bingbot (Bing and Copilot) and Googlebot (Google search and AI Overviews). Training bots like GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended and CCBot are a separate choice — blocking Google-Extended does not remove you from AI Overviews. Details are in our AI crawlers and robots.txt guide.
- Entity cleanup. One version of your name, address, phone, hours and service area across your site, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and the major directories in your trade.
- Answer-ready pages. Each core service and location page opens with a direct, factual answer, then covers price factors, timelines, service area and common questions in plain language.
- Structured data. LocalBusiness, Service and FAQPage schema that matches what the page actually says.
- Reviews and mentions. A steady, compliant review request process, owner responses, and real listings or coverage on the directories, associations and local sites your customers trust. On Google, that now includes Business Profile Q&A, which Google is testing in a revamped form with yes/no prompts for owners.
- Monitoring. A fixed set of prompts, checked on a schedule, with changes logged against the work done.
This is what our answer engine optimization service runs month to month for local businesses, and every step can be started with the free tools on this site.
How do you measure AEO results?
Measure AEO with a fixed panel of customer prompts checked monthly for mention and citation rate, plus AI referral traffic in GA4, Google Search Console's AI report and Bing's AI Performance report.
No single dashboard shows everything, so good measurement stacks five views.
| Method | What it tells you | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Prompt panel | Whether you are named for the 10–30 questions your customers really ask, across engines | Answers vary run to run; track rates over time, not single results |
| Mention and citation rate | Share of prompts where you are named, and where your site is linked as a source | Needs the same prompts, location and cadence each month to compare |
| GA4 AI referrals | Visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com, copilot.microsoft.com and similar | Misses people who read the answer and call you directly |
| Search Console AI report | Impressions, pages, countries and devices for Google's AI features | No clicks or queries, and not on every domain yet |
| Bing AI Performance | How often Copilot and Bing AI cite you, with Intents, Topics, Citation Share and Compare views | Covers Microsoft surfaces only |
In GA4, create a custom channel group or exploration that matches AI sources by session source. ChatGPT often tags outbound links with utm_source=chatgpt.com, which makes those visits easy to separate.
Then add the simplest measure of all: ask every new caller how they found you, and log "ChatGPT" or "Google AI" as its own answer. Much AI influence never shows up as a click.
Which AEO claims should you ignore?
Ignore anyone who guarantees AI placement, sells llms.txt as a magic fix, or pitches hundreds of AI-written pages — none of these hold up against how answer engines actually work.
"We guarantee you will be recommended by ChatGPT"
Nobody controls that. AI answers change with wording, location and what the engine retrieves at that moment. What an agency can honestly offer is a measured rate of mentions across a fixed prompt panel and a plan to raise it.
"Just add an llms.txt file"
llms.txt is a 2024 proposal for a plain-text site summary aimed at language models. No major engine has confirmed that it changes local recommendations. It is cheap to add — our llms.txt generator takes a minute — but it is a nice-to-have, not a strategy.
"Publish hundreds of AI pages to cover every question"
Google's August 2026 spam update ran August 18–21, and reports say it targeted mass AI-generated content. Thin pages built to game engines put the rest of your site at risk. A dozen genuinely useful pages beat five hundred templated ones.
"AEO replaces SEO"
Answer engines retrieve from search indexes. Drop the SEO foundation and there is less for them to find.
How do you start on AEO this week?
Start by checking whether AI tools already name you, confirming AI crawlers can reach your site, fixing your business facts, grading your top page, and adding schema — five steps you can finish in a week.
- See where you stand. Write down 10 questions a customer would ask, such as "best emergency plumber in Jacksonville" or "who fixes AC same day near Riverside." Run them through the AI Visibility Checker and save the results as your baseline.
- Open the door to AI crawlers. Run your domain through the AI Crawler Checker. If OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Bingbot or Googlebot is blocked by robots.txt or a firewall rule, fix that first — nothing else works until it is fixed.
- Make your facts match everywhere. Pick one exact version of your name, address, phone, hours and service area. Update your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Yelp, BBB and Angi to match, and send a review request to your last 20 happy customers.
- Grade and rewrite your most important page. Put your top service page into the Answer Readiness Grader. Rewrite the first paragraph as a direct answer — what you do, where, and how fast — and add five real customer questions with short answers.
- Add schema and start tracking. Generate LocalBusiness and FAQPage markup with the Schema Generator, set up an AI referral channel in GA4, and put a monthly reminder on your calendar to rerun step 1.
From there, work through the AEO checklist, then read how to get recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews for local businesses for engine-specific tactics.
Frequently asked questions
What does AEO stand for?
AEO stands for answer engine optimization. It is the practice of making a business easy for AI tools like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot to find, trust and recommend in their answers. Some people call the same work GEO (generative engine optimization) or LLM SEO.
Is AEO the same as GEO?
In practice, yes. GEO (generative engine optimization) and AEO describe the same goal: being included and cited in AI-generated answers. The labels differ by who is writing about it, but the work on the ground is the same.
Can an agency guarantee my business will be recommended by ChatGPT?
No. AI answers change from one run to the next and depend on the wording of the question, the user's location and the sources the engine retrieves at that moment. An honest agency will measure how often you are mentioned across a fixed set of prompts and work to raise that rate, not promise a placement.
How long does AEO take to show results?
Fixes to crawler access, business listings and page structure can be picked up as soon as engines recrawl those pages, which is often a matter of weeks. Earning reviews and third-party mentions takes longer and compounds over months. Track the same prompt panel monthly so you can see the trend instead of guessing.
How much does AEO cost?
WebFX's 2026 pricing guide puts AI search optimization for small businesses at typically $1,500 to $5,000 a month. The price depends on how many locations and services you have and how much content and listing cleanup is needed. You can also do the first steps yourself with free tools.
Do I still need SEO if I invest in AEO?
Yes. Answer engines like ChatGPT, Copilot and Google AI Overviews pull from search indexes before they write an answer, so a site that search engines cannot crawl or rank well is harder for AI tools to cite. AEO builds on top of SEO rather than replacing it.
