Your customers have started asking ChatGPT who to call. BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found that 45% of US consumers now use AI tools for local business recommendations, up from 6% the year before, and ChatGPT is the most-used of those tools at 31% of AI users.
We see it on our own phone line: many of the business owners who call Media Spearhead say an AI assistant recommended us, and AI is now our biggest source of new clients. This is the playbook we use, in order of impact.
How does ChatGPT choose which local businesses to recommend?
For local questions, ChatGPT searches the web in real time, leans on Bing results, and builds its answer from business websites, directories and review platforms it can read.
Ask "who's the best emergency plumber in Tampa" and ChatGPT usually runs a live web search rather than answering from memory. A Search Engine Land test described in Cheers' analysis of ChatGPT sources observed ChatGPT running a Bing search for a local query, taking 20 to 30 of the top results and reordering them with its own logic.
What it cites is split almost evenly between your site and everyone else's. Cheers classified 70,723 ChatGPT citations from 32 home-services prompts across 100 US and Canadian metros over 28 days ending September 2, 2026:
| Source type | Share of ChatGPT citations |
|---|---|
| Business websites | 48.8% |
| Directories and review platforms (Angi, BBB, Yelp and similar) | 44.7% |
| Social and forums (Reddit, Facebook, Nextdoor) | 4.3% |
| Media and vendor pages | 2.0% |
| google.com | 0.2% |
Your website is the largest single source, so it must be readable and specific. Nearly half the evidence lives on sites you do not control, so listings and reviews carry as much weight as your homepage.
Since March 31, 2026, ChatGPT users can turn on optional location sharing for more localized "near me" results. It is off by default, so many people still type the city into the prompt. Name the places you serve in plain words.
How do I check whether ChatGPT recommends my business today?
Ask ChatGPT the questions your customers ask, in a fresh chat, and write down whether you appear, where you rank and which sources it cites.
Start with five to ten prompts that match how people actually buy. Mix service, city and urgency:
- "Best [service] company in [city]"
- "Who should I call for [specific problem] in [neighborhood]?"
- "Top-rated [profession] near [landmark or zip code]"
- "[Service] in [city] open on weekends"
- "Is [your business name] any good?"
For each answer, record whether you are named, your position, the sources ChatGPT links, and whether your phone, hours and services are correct. The cited sources are your to-do list: if Angi and a local "best of" article keep appearing, those pages shape the answer.
Run the same prompts in Perplexity and Gemini. If you are missing everywhere, suspect a crawl or listings problem before a content problem.
How do I make sure ChatGPT can find and read my website?
Allow OpenAI's search crawlers in robots.txt, get your site indexed in Bing through Bing Webmaster Tools, and claim your Bing Places listing.
Everything else depends on this. If ChatGPT cannot fetch your pages, your content never reaches the answer.
Check robots.txt for the right crawlers
OpenAI runs three crawlers with different jobs. According to OpenAI's crawler documentation, sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers," and changes take about 24 hours to apply.
- OAI-SearchBot builds the index ChatGPT search uses. Allow it.
- ChatGPT-User fetches a page when a user's request triggers it. Allow it.
- GPTBot collects training data. Blocking it is a content-licensing choice and does not remove you from search answers.
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot / Allow: / and User-agent: ChatGPT-User / Allow: /. Also confirm Bingbot is not blocked, and that your firewall or CDN is not challenging these bots with a CAPTCHA.Security plugins and CDN bot protection often block AI crawlers even when robots.txt allows them, so test from the outside. Our AI crawlers and robots.txt guide lists every major bot and what it controls.
Get into Bing
- Verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools (you can import from Google Search Console in a few clicks).
- Submit your XML sitemap and check the index coverage report for pages Bing has skipped.
- Search Bing for your top service plus your city. If your pages do not appear, ChatGPT's Bing-based searches will likely miss them too.
- Claim and complete Bing Places for Business. ChatGPT was not observed reading Bing Places data directly, but it is free, it feeds Bing's own local results, and it is one more consistent listing.
Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report now shows your citations across Microsoft Copilot, Bing and select partner AI experiences, with Local intent grouping and a Citation Share metric added in June 2026.
Why do my business details need to match on every listing?
ChatGPT cross-checks your business across your website and dozens of directories, and conflicting names, phone numbers, hours or service areas make it less confident recommending you.
Directories and review platforms supplied 44.7% of ChatGPT's local citations in the Cheers data. When one says you close at 5 and your site says 7, the answer can be wrong, or you get left out.
Write down one master record, then make every listing match it exactly:
- Legal business name, written the same way everywhere (no keyword stuffing)
- One primary phone number and one address format
- Hours, including emergency or after-hours availability
- Service area: the cities, counties or neighborhoods you actually serve
- Core services, licenses, certifications and years in business
- Website URL, pointing to the right location page for multi-location businesses
Then work through the listings in this order: your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp, BBB, Angi, and the directories specific to your trade: Avvo, Justia and FindLaw for law firms; Healthgrades and Zocdoc for dentists; RepairPal for auto shops; manufacturer dealer locators for HVAC. Close duplicate listings instead of leaving them live.
Customers verify what AI tells them: BrightLocal found 88% of AI users fact-check AI recommendations and 97% double-check against real reviews. A wrong phone number costs you the call even when the recommendation is right.
What kind of reviews help a business get recommended?
Steady, recent reviews on the platforms ChatGPT cites, written in customers' own words about the specific job, the neighborhood and the result, help far more than a pile of five-star one-liners.
An AI answer has to justify its picks. "Great service" gives it nothing to say. A review like "they replaced our water heater in Riverside the same afternoon" gives it a service, a place and a reason.
- Volume: enough on each major platform that a pattern is visible.
- Recency: a steady flow every month, not a burst two years ago.
- Spread: reviews on the platforms that show up in your prompt tests, not only Google.
- Specifics: ask customers to mention the service and their area. Do not script their words.
- Responses: reply to every review, including bad ones. Your reply is public text too.
Ask right after the job, by text, with a direct link and one line such as "It helps other homeowners if you mention what we fixed."
What should my service and location pages say?
Each page should state what you do, where, for whom and how fast in its first sentence, then back it up with prices or ranges, credentials, process and answers to common questions.
ChatGPT lifts sentences, not pages. Write your opening sentence as the answer to "who does this near me."
Compare "Welcome to our family-owned company, where comfort is our passion," which could belong to any business in any city.
A strong service page contains:
- One service per page: "drain cleaning," not "plumbing services"
- The cities and neighborhoods served, in text, not only on a map image
- What the job involves, how long it takes and what affects the cost
- Licenses, certifications, warranties and years of experience
- Three to six real customer questions, answered in two to four sentences each
- Your phone number and hours, matching your master record
Build a location page only where you have something real to say about that area: local jobs, the team that covers it, local codes. Mass-produced city pages with swapped place names are a spam risk. Google's August 2026 spam update ran August 18 to 21, and reports say it targeted mass AI-generated content.
Our Answer Readiness Grader scores any page against these points and returns a fix list.
Which schema markup should a local business add?
Add LocalBusiness (or the closest subtype, such as Plumber, Dentist or LegalService) on your homepage and location pages, Service on each service page, and FAQPage wherever you answer questions on the page.
Schema is structured data in your page code that states your facts in a machine-readable format. It does not guarantee a recommendation, as Cheers also notes. It removes ambiguity about your name, address, phone, hours, service area and services.
- LocalBusiness subtype: name, address, phone, hours, geo coordinates, areaServed, and sameAs links to your Yelp, BBB, Angi and other profiles.
- Service: serviceType, provider (your business) and areaServed for each service page.
- FAQPage: only for questions and answers that are visible on the page.
The rule that matters most: the schema must match the visible page and your master record. Schema that disagrees with your listings adds to the conflict instead of fixing it. The free schema generator builds valid JSON-LD for all three types.
How do I earn third-party mentions that AI engines trust?
Get named on independent sites that already cover your market: local news, trade and professional associations, credible "best of" lists and active community threads.
Directories confirm you exist. Independent mentions explain why you are a good choice, without relying on your own claims.
- Local press: offer a useful story, such as storm-damage advice from a roofer or a free safety inspection day from an auto shop.
- Associations: chamber of commerce, state bar and dental association directories, trade groups and manufacturer certification programs all publish member lists.
- "Best of" lists: pursue lists from established local publications that evaluate businesses on stated criteria.
- Community threads: Reddit, Nextdoor and local Facebook groups. Answer questions under your real name and disclose who you are. Do not post fake recommendations.
How do I track ChatGPT visibility month to month?
Run the same fixed panel of prompts on the same day each month, log whether you appear and which sources are cited, and judge the trend over three months or more.
AI answers vary between runs, so a single check proves little. A fixed panel turns noise into a trend.
- Lock 10 to 20 prompts covering your top services, your main cities and one or two brand questions. Do not reword them later.
- Run each in a fresh chat, ideally twice, with no location sharing on, and record the city in the prompt instead.
- Log for each: mentioned (yes/no), position, competitors named, sources cited, facts correct.
- Calculate your share: the percentage of prompts where you appear.
- Add the platform data you can get. Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report covers Copilot and Bing. Google Search Console's generative AI performance report shows impressions, pages, countries and devices for Google's AI features, but no clicks or queries, and it is not live on every domain yet.
- Ask every new caller how they found you, and tag the ones who say ChatGPT or another AI tool.
What should I work on this month?
Fix access first, then facts, then reviews and pages, then mentions; this table maps each signal to where ChatGPT sees it and the task to finish this month.
| Signal | Where ChatGPT sees it | What to do this month |
|---|---|---|
| Crawler access | Your robots.txt, firewall and CDN, via OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User | Allow both bots and test from outside with the AI Crawler Checker |
| Bing presence | Bing web results ChatGPT pulls for local queries | Verify Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap, claim Bing Places |
| Consistent business facts | Your site plus directories and review platforms (44.7% of citations) | Write the master record and fix your top 10 listings |
| Reviews | Yelp, BBB, Angi and trade directories cited in answers | Start a post-job review text for every completed job |
| Answer-first pages | Your service and location pages (48.8% of citations) | Rewrite the first sentence of your top three service pages |
| Schema | Structured data in your page code | Add LocalBusiness, Service and FAQPage markup that matches your listings |
| Third-party mentions | Local media, association sites, "best of" lists, Reddit and Nextdoor | Pitch one local story and complete one association listing |
| Tracking | Your own prompt log plus Bing and Google AI reports | Run the fixed prompt panel and record the baseline |

Can anyone guarantee my business a spot in ChatGPT?
No. Nobody outside OpenAI controls which businesses ChatGPT recommends, so any agency promising guaranteed placement is making a promise it cannot keep.
What you control is the evidence: a readable site, consistent facts, detailed reviews and independent mentions. Improve those and your odds improve, though answers will still vary by run and engine.
That is why we measure share of answers over time instead of promising a position. If you would rather hand this off, our answer engine optimization service runs this playbook month to month, alongside SEO for the Google side.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT recommendations?
Crawler and Bing fixes can be picked up within days; OpenAI says robots.txt changes for OAI-SearchBot take about 24 hours to take effect. Listing cleanup, reviews and third-party mentions build over months. Judge progress on a three-month trend, not a single test.
Does ChatGPT use my Google Business Profile?
Public evidence does not establish that ChatGPT reads Google Business Profile data directly, and google.com made up only 0.2% of ChatGPT citations in one large 2026 analysis. Keep your profile accurate anyway, because Google Maps, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode do use it, and customers still check it.
Which matters more for ChatGPT: my website or my listings?
Both, almost equally. In a 2026 analysis of 70,723 ChatGPT citations for home-services prompts, business websites made up 48.8% and directories and review platforms 44.7%. Fix your site first because you control it fully, then bring your listings into line with it.
Should I block GPTBot to protect my content?
You can. GPTBot is OpenAI's training crawler, and blocking it does not remove you from ChatGPT search answers. The crawler that matters for being shown in ChatGPT search is OAI-SearchBot, so if you block GPTBot, make sure OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User stay allowed.
Is ChatGPT SEO different from regular SEO?
It overlaps heavily: crawlable pages, clear service content, consistent listings and reviews help both. The differences are that ChatGPT leans on Bing rather than Google, cites directories and review sites nearly as often as business websites, and rewards pages that answer the question in the first sentence. Our AEO vs SEO guide covers the split in detail.
Do I need an llms.txt file to get recommended by ChatGPT?
No. llms.txt is a 2024 proposal, and no major AI engine has confirmed that it changes local recommendations. Crawler access, consistent listings, reviews and answer-first pages matter far more.
