Search is becoming answers — and the clicks are disappearing.
Read the last card again: most of what AI answers cite never ranked on page one. That is the opening answer engine optimization services are built to capture — and why a focused answer engine optimization agency can move the needle even where your SEO is still catching up.
Many of the business owners who call us today say the same thing: an AI assistant recommended Media Spearhead.
AI is now our biggest source of new clients, and new ones arrive every week. We didn't get there by luck — we built our own site, profiles and reviews with the same answer engine optimization we run for you. Read exactly what we did →
We don't sell AEO theory. We rank #1 in ChatGPT ourselves.
A business owner in Texas recently opened ChatGPT and asked — in Spanish — "¿Qué agencia de marketing me puede ayudar a hacer crecer mi negocio y habla español?" Which marketing agency can help me grow my business and speaks Spanish?
ChatGPT named Media Spearhead as its #1 recommendation. He booked a consultation the same day and became a lead before he'd ever seen a Google ad, a ranking report or a cold email from us. One prompt, one answer, one signed conversation — the entire funnel happened inside a single AI answer.
That's not a lucky break. It's the output of running the exact playbook on our own business that we sell to clients: answer-first pages, clean entity data across every directory, reviews that describe the work in customers' words, and schema that tells machines precisely who we are and where we work — in English and Spanish. Every answer engine optimization agency will show you a slide deck about AI search. We can show you the prompt that pays our bills. The full playbook we ran on ourselves is here.

How long has Media Spearhead been doing AEO?
We've run SEO and Google Ads for local service businesses since 2017, and we've tracked AI search since ChatGPT launched in November 2022. AEO isn't a pivot for us. It's the same evidence work, aimed at a new kind of search.
Most agencies selling AEO today started calling it that in 2024 or later. We tested every major launch as it happened, rebuilt our own site around what worked, and watched AI become the channel that brings us the most new clients. We still follow every update, and we publish what matters for local businesses each week in the AEO news feed.
Media Spearhead founded

Can I check my AI visibility before I hire an AEO agency?
Yes. We built five free AEO tools so you can see where you stand before you talk to anyone, including us.
Most AEO agencies ask you to book a call before they show you anything. We'd rather you see the problem for yourself first. Every tool below is free, and none of them needs a login.
Which industries does Media Spearhead do AEO for?
Local and regional service businesses, where customers ask AI "who's the best near me" and the answer names only a few companies.
Every trade gets asked different questions, and AI engines weigh different evidence for each one. These are the kinds of prompts we track for clients, and what tends to decide the answer.

What is answer engine optimization?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of getting your business named, cited and recommended inside AI-generated answers — not just ranked in a list of links.
Search used to end in ten blue links and a click. Now a growing share ends in an answer: Google writes an AI Overview above the results, ChatGPT and Perplexity reply with a short list, and Gemini and Copilot do the same inside phones, browsers and cars. The customer reads the answer and calls one of the businesses in it. AEO is how you become one of those businesses.
You'll also hear it called generative engine optimization (GEO), AI SEO or LLM SEO. Same goal, different labels. Here's how it relates to the SEO you already know.
| Traditional SEO | Answer engine optimization | |
|---|---|---|
| The goal | Rank a page in the top results | Get named and cited inside the AI answer |
| Where it shows | Google and Bing results pages | ChatGPT, AI Overviews & AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, voice assistants |
| What wins | Relevance, links, technical health | All of that, plus consistent business facts everywhere, answer-shaped content, reviews and third-party mentions |
| The unit of success | A position and a click | A mention, a citation and a call — often with no click at all |
| How it's measured | Rankings, organic traffic | Share of answer across a fixed prompt panel, AI referral traffic, calls |
| Relationship | AEO sits on top of SEO. AI engines retrieve from search indexes, so a site that can't rank rarely gets cited. We do both. | |
What's the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?
SEO gets you ranked in a list of links. AEO gets you named inside the AI-generated answer. GEO — generative engine optimization — is simply another name for AEO: same work, academic label.
AI engines get asked "what's the difference between AEO and GEO" thousands of times a day, so here is the plain version. Search engine optimization is the 25-year-old discipline of ranking pages in Google and Bing. Answer engine optimization is the newer discipline of becoming the business, source or quote that AI engines use when they compose an answer. Generative engine optimization is the term researchers coined in 2023 for the exact same discipline — if an agency sells "GEO services" and "AEO services" as two separate packages, they're billing you twice for one job.
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stands for | Search engine optimization | Answer engine optimization | Generative engine optimization |
| What it targets | Positions in Google's and Bing's list of results | Mentions, citations and recommendations inside AI answers | Identical to AEO — same targets, same tactics |
| Where results show up | Google and Bing results pages, map pack | ChatGPT, AI Overviews & AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Claude, voice assistants | The same AI surfaces as AEO |
| How it's measured | Keyword rankings, organic sessions, leads | Share of answer across a fixed prompt panel, citation rate per engine, AI referral traffic and calls in GA4 | The same metrics as AEO |
| Where the term came from | The search industry, since the 1990s | The search industry, as AI answers absorbed featured snippets and voice results | Academic research papers, 2023 |
New to the terms? Read our plain-English guides to generative engine optimization (GEO) and super intelligence (SI) optimization, the newest name for the same work. The practical takeaway: you don't choose between them. Strong SEO services are the foundation AI engines retrieve from, and AEO is the layer that turns that foundation into citations and recommendations. Our answer engine optimization services include both labels' worth of work in one program — no duplicated line items, no acronym tax.
How do AI engines decide which businesses to recommend?
AI engines recommend the businesses they can verify from several independent sources at once — your website, the directories and review sites that describe you, and the people who talk about you.
No engine publishes its ranking rules. But how these systems retrieve information is well understood, and citation studies show a consistent pattern. For local service businesses, six signals do the heavy lifting.
Retrievable in search indexes
ChatGPT search has been observed running Bing queries for local prompts; AI Overviews and Gemini draw on Google's index. If your pages aren't indexed and ranking in both, you're invisible before the model ever reads you.
One consistent set of facts
Name, address, phone, service area, hours, licenses. When your website, Google, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp and BBB disagree, models hedge — and hedging means someone else gets named.
Reviews that say something
Volume, recency and rating matter, and so does the language. A review that says "fixed our AC the same afternoon in Riverside" gives an engine words to match a same-day, local question.
Answer-shaped pages
Pages that answer one question clearly in the first sentence — price ranges, service areas, what's included, how fast — are easy for a model to lift and cite. Vague brochure copy isn't.
Structured data and crawler access
LocalBusiness, Service and FAQ schema tell machines exactly what you are. A robots file that quietly blocks OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or Bingbot removes you from the answer entirely.
Third-party mentions
Local news, trade associations, "best of" lists, Reddit and Nextdoor threads. Independent sources that name you are the strongest evidence an engine has that you're the real answer.
Where ChatGPT's local recommendations come from
Share of 70,723 ChatGPT citations across 100 US and Canadian metros. Cheers, ChatGPT local citation baseline, September 2026. The takeaway: your website and the directories that describe you do almost all the work — both are fixable.
What does our answer engine optimization service include?
Six workstreams, run every month: we measure where you stand in AI answers, fix the sources engines read, publish the content they cite and report the result in plain numbers.
Because we're an AEO agency built for local service businesses — not B2B software brands — every deliverable below is calibrated for how people actually hire a lawyer, an HVAC company, a doctor or a roofer: they ask who's best, who's nearby and who they can trust, and they increasingly ask an AI instead of a search box. The six workstreams map to the five phases we run them in, detailed further down this page.

What does an answer engine optimization agency actually do, month to month?
Five phases, in order: audit your AI visibility, engineer answer-first content, fix the technical layer, build your entity and citations, then monitor and report every month.
Most agencies describe AEO as a vibe — "we optimize for AI." Here's what the work actually looks like when an AEO company runs it as an operator would. This is the same sequence we ran on our own business, and it's the sequence we run for every client.
Week 1 · BaselineAI Visibility Audit
We take the real questions your customers ask — "best roofer in Fort Myers," "personal injury lawyer near me free consultation," "who installs mini-splits same day" — and run a panel of 25–50 of them through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Copilot. For every prompt we record who gets named, which sources get cited and how each engine describes you versus your top three competitors. You get a baseline report that usually surprises people: businesses that rank #1 in Google are frequently invisible in AI answers, and the reverse is also true.
- 25–50 real customer prompts
- 5 engines tested
- Competitor share-of-answer
- Source-by-source citation map
Weeks 2–6 · ContentAnswer-First Content Engineering
AI engines extract answers; they don't summarize brochures. We restructure your key pages into question-and-answer modules: the customer's question as the heading, a direct 40–120 word answer block immediately under it, then the supporting detail, pricing ranges, service areas and proof. We build the pages your buyers actually prompt about — cost pages, "how to choose" comparisons, service-area pages, emergency-availability pages — written in the plain, specific language that models lift and quote. Vague marketing copy gets skipped; concrete answers get cited.
- 40–120 word answer blocks
- Question-format headings
- Facts tables engines can lift
- Cost, comparison & service-area pages
Weeks 2–4 · TechnicalSchema & AI Crawler Access
We mark up your site so machines can read it without guessing: LocalBusiness and Service schema for what you do and where, FAQPage and Article markup for the answer modules, speakable structured data where it fits, and sameAs links tying your site to your profiles. Then we verify the crawlers that feed AI answers can actually reach you — OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot for ChatGPT, PerplexityBot, Bingbot for Copilot and ChatGPT search, Googlebot for AI Overviews and Gemini. A single robots.txt rule or firewall setting has removed more businesses from AI answers than any content problem we've seen.
- Service, FAQ, Article & speakable schema
- AI crawler access verified
- Google & Bing indexing fixes
- sameAs entity linking
Ongoing · AuthorityEntity & Citation Building
AI engines trust businesses they can verify from independent sources. We make your entity consistent and findable: Google Business Profile fully built out, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect claimed, trade directories and BBB corrected, Wikidata and knowledge-graph signals where you're eligible, and identical name-address-phone facts everywhere a model might look. Then we grow the third-party evidence — local press, association listings, "best of" coverage, reviews that describe the actual work — because what others say about you outweighs what you say about yourself.
- GBP, Bing Places & Apple Business Connect
- Wikidata / knowledge-graph signals
- NAP & sameAs consistency
- Third-party mentions & reviews
Monthly · ProofCitation Monitoring & Reporting
Every month we re-run your exact prompt panel across all five engines and track the movement: your mention rate, your citation rate, your answer position and your share of answer against named competitors for the queries that pay you. Paired with AI referral traffic in GA4 and the calls and forms those sessions produce, you get a report that reads like a scoreboard — not a screenshot of a lucky prompt. When an engine shifts or a competitor gains ground, you see it in the numbers and we adjust.
- Same prompts, re-run monthly
- Share of answer vs competitors
- AI referral traffic in GA4
- Calls & forms attributed
Phase 1 is free on your first call.
Bring your trade and your cities — we'll run a live mini-audit of who ChatGPT, Gemini and AI Overviews name today, and what it would take for it to be you.
Which AI engines do you optimize for?
The five that matter most for US local search today, plus Claude — each one reads the web a little differently, so we track and tune for each.
How long does AEO take to show results?
Engines that search the live web can pick up corrected sources within weeks; reviews, mentions and authority compound over months. You see the trend on the same prompts every month.
Two honest caveats. First, your starting point matters: a business with strong reviews and a decent site moves faster than one rebuilding from zero. Second, the engines update constantly, so "done" doesn't exist — the businesses that hold their positions are the ones with a standing measurement loop. That's why the timeline below ends in a monthly rhythm, not a finish line.
Baseline
Prompt panel built with you, run across five engines. You see exactly who gets named in your market today, and why.
Foundation
Business facts corrected everywhere, schema deployed, crawler access verified, Google and Bing indexing checked.
Content & evidence
Answer-ready pages published, review program running, the first third-party mentions landed.
Measure & compound
Same prompts re-run, gaps closed, competitors watched. Month-to-month — you stay because it works.
How do you measure answer engine optimization?
With a fixed panel of real customer prompts, run across every engine every month, so progress is counted — not guessed.
AI answers vary by prompt, place and day, so a single screenshot proves nothing. A panel of the same 25–50 questions, tracked over time, shows the real trend: how often you're named, how often your site is the cited source and how you're described. Then we tie it to money — AI referral sessions in Google Analytics 4 and the calls and forms they produce.
Every monthly report shows four things side by side: citation frequency per engine (ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot), your share of answer versus your three named competitors for the prompts that pay you, AI referral traffic in GA4 segmented from organic, and the calls and form fills those AI sessions produced. If a number moves, you'll know why; if nothing moves, you'll know that too — the report shows the same prompts either way.
Why choose Media Spearhead as your AEO agency?
Because AEO only works on top of strong SEO, clean local data and real reviews — and we've been doing all three for local service businesses since 2017, as a Google Premier Partner. It works on us first: AI assistants are now our biggest source of new clients, and new business owners find us that way every week.
Many AEO agencies were built for B2B software brands. Local service businesses have a different problem: the answer is "three companies near you," and the evidence engines use is your Google profile, your reviews, your directories and your service pages. That's the ground we already work on every day — for lawyers, HVAC companies, doctors, roofers, dentists and contractors across every market we serve. When someone asks an AI "who's the best near me," national brand authority barely matters; local proof decides. That is the game our AEO services are built to win.

A strong fit if…
- You're a local or regional service business — home services, legal, medical, automotive, trades
- Customers choose you on trust: reviews, reputation, "who's the best"
- You already rank somewhere in Google, or want SEO and AEO built together
- You want monthly numbers, not screenshots
Probably not a fit if…
- You want a guaranteed "#1 in ChatGPT" — nobody can honestly promise that
- You need leads next week; that's what Google Ads is for, and we run that too
- Your reviews or licensing have real problems you're not ready to fix
- You're looking for a $99 tool, not a team
What won't Media Spearhead promise you?
We won't guarantee ChatGPT citations, we won't promise overnight AI rankings, and we won't sell AEO as a one-time setup — because nobody can honestly deliver any of those.
Every answer engine optimization company competing for your business has a pitch. Ours includes the things we won't do, because how an agency handles these three questions tells you more than any case study.
If you're comparing AEO companies right now, ask each one these three questions on the call. The ones that hesitate, hedge or promise all three are telling you exactly who they are.
What should you avoid when hiring for AEO?
Avoid anyone selling guarantees, secret tricks or a single file that "puts you in ChatGPT." AEO is evidence work, and it compounds.
Answer engine optimization FAQ
What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?
Answer engine optimization is the work of getting your business named, cited and recommended inside AI-generated answers — ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot. SEO earns a position in a list of links; AEO earns a place in the answer itself, which is often the only thing the customer reads.
Is AEO different from SEO?
AEO is built on SEO, not a replacement for it. AI engines retrieve from search indexes, your website and the directories and review sites that describe you, so strong SEO is the foundation. AEO adds the parts SEO usually skips: consistent business facts across every source the engines read, answer-shaped content, structured data, review and mention signals, and measuring how often you are named across a fixed set of real customer prompts.
What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
They describe the same goal. Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the term used in academic research and by some agencies; answer engine optimization (AEO) is the term most businesses search for. LLM SEO and AI SEO are used the same way. The work is identical: become the source AI engines trust and name.
Does AEO replace SEO?
No — AEO sits on top of SEO. AI engines retrieve from Google's and Bing's indexes, so a site that cannot rank in search rarely gets cited in answers. Most of our clients run both: SEO keeps you visible in the results that still carry most local demand, and AEO extends that visibility into the AI answers growing above and around them.
Which AI engines do you optimize for?
ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot — the five that matter for US local search today — plus Claude, which recommends businesses when it searches the web. Each engine reads different sources: ChatGPT leans on Bing and directories, Gemini on Google Search and Maps, Copilot on Bing Places. We track your prompts on each engine separately.
What is an AI visibility audit?
It is the baseline we run before any work starts. We build a panel of 25–50 real questions your customers ask — "best personal injury lawyer in Jacksonville," "AC repair near me open now" — run them through ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot, and record who gets named, who gets cited and how each engine describes you. You see exactly where you stand before spending a dollar.
Can you guarantee ChatGPT will recommend my business?
No, and anyone who does is guessing. AI answers change by prompt, location, day and model version, and no engine publishes its ranking rules. What we guarantee is the work and the measurement: a fixed prompt panel tracked every month, so you see your mention rate move — or not — in plain numbers.
How long does AEO take to work?
Engines that search the live web, such as ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews, can pick up corrected sources within weeks of them being re-crawled. Signals like review volume, third-party mentions and topical authority compound over months. We set a baseline in week one and report the same prompts monthly, so the trend is visible either way.
How does ChatGPT decide which local businesses to recommend?
OpenAI does not publish a retrieval map, but citation studies point to two sources doing most of the work: the business's own website and the directories and review platforms that describe it. A September 2026 analysis of 70,723 ChatGPT citations across 100 US and Canadian metros found 48.8% came from business websites and 44.7% from directories and review sites such as BBB, Yelp and Angi. Consistent facts, strong reviews and clear service pages on your own site are the levers.
Do I still need Google Ads and SEO if I invest in AEO?
Yes for most local service businesses. Google still carries the majority of local search demand and paid search captures buyers who are ready now. AEO protects and extends that visibility into the answers that increasingly sit above or replace the links. We run all three under one roof, so the work reinforces itself instead of three vendors pulling in different directions.
How do you measure AEO results?
We track a fixed panel of real customer prompts — for example "best emergency plumber in Jacksonville" — across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot every month. For each prompt we record whether you are named, whether your site is cited, your position in the answer and how you are described. Alongside that: AI referral traffic in Google Analytics 4 and the calls and forms it produces.
How much does answer engine optimization cost?
Answer engine optimization pricing is quoted on the call against your market, locations and competition, month-to-month with no long-term contract. For context, 2026 market pricing for AI search optimization typically runs about $1,500–$5,000 per month for small businesses and more for multi-location brands. AEO is also available as an add-on for existing SEO clients.
Does Media Spearhead use answer engine optimization on its own business?
Yes, and it is now our biggest source of new clients. Many of the business owners who call Media Spearhead today tell us an AI assistant such as ChatGPT recommended us. The same methods we use on our own site, profiles and reviews are the ones we run for clients.
Is Media Spearhead an AEO agency?
Yes. Media Spearhead is a Jacksonville-based digital marketing agency and Google Premier Partner that has run SEO and Google Ads for local service businesses since 2017, and it now offers answer engine optimization as a dedicated service. AEO works on us first: business owners find Media Spearhead every week by asking AI assistants for an agency.
How long has Media Spearhead been doing AEO?
We have tracked AI search since ChatGPT launched in November 2022 and tested each major change as it arrived, including Google AI Overviews in 2024, ChatGPT search in late 2024 and Google AI Mode in 2025. Before that we had already spent years on the SEO, local listings and review work that AI answers draw on. We publish what we learn in a weekly AEO news feed.
Does the new "Super Intelligence" name for AI change AEO?
No. In September 2026 the White House told federal agencies to call AI "Super Intelligence" (SI), but the order does not apply to businesses and does not change how ChatGPT, Gemini or Google AI Overviews choose which businesses to recommend. Answer engine optimization works the same way, whatever the technology is called.
Is AEO worth it for a local service business?
It is worth it when customers in your trade are already asking AI who to hire — and in 2026 that is most trades. BrightLocal's 2026 survey found 45% of US consumers now use AI tools for local business recommendations, up from 6% a year earlier. If you are not one of the few businesses named in that answer, you do not get a chance to compete for the job.
AI recommends us every week. Let's make it recommend you.
Give us your trade and your cities. We'll run your customers' real questions through ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot and show you who gets named, who gets cited and what it would take for it to be you. No contract, no pressure — and if AEO isn't the right move yet, we'll say so.
