Google Ads Call Tracking Setup: Forwarding Numbers, Call Assets & Offline Conversions

How to set up Google Ads call tracking: Google forwarding numbers, call assets vs. call-only ads, calls from ads vs. calls from your site, and offline conversion imports that tell Google which calls became customers.

Google Ads Call Tracking Setup: Forwarding Numbers, Call Assets & Offline Conversions

If you run a service business, most of your Google Ads conversions are phone calls — and by default, Google counts almost none of them correctly. A plumber whose ads generate 40 calls a month but whose account shows 6 "conversions" isn't getting bad results; they're getting bad measurement. And bad measurement doesn't just distort reports — it actively misinforms smart bidding, which optimizes toward whatever you call a conversion.

Below: the four layers of call tracking (call assets, call-only ads, website call tracking, offline imports), the exact setup steps for each, and the thresholds and mistakes that separate clean data from garbage.

Why Call Tracking Matters More Than Any Other Conversion Setup

For local service businesses, phone calls convert to revenue at 3–10× the rate of form fills. Callers have a problem right now — a burst pipe, a broken AC in August, an arrest last night. If your tracking only captures forms, you're telling Google's bidding algorithm that your worst leads are your only leads. Target CPA will dutifully find you more of them.

Call tracking fixes the signal. Done right, it answers three questions: which keywords make the phone ring, which of those calls were real leads (not spam, not wrong numbers, not existing customers), and which leads became booked jobs. The third answer is the one almost nobody sets up — and the one worth the most.

Layer 1: Call Assets (Formerly Call Extensions)

A call asset attaches a phone number to your search ads. On mobile, it renders as a tap-to-call button; on desktop, as a number next to the ad. When someone taps it, Google routes the call through a Google forwarding number — a temporary number that redirects to your real line and logs the call's duration, time, area code, and which campaign/keyword produced it.

Setup: Call Asset With Conversion Reporting

  1. Go to Tools → Conversions → Summary → New conversion action and confirm a "Phone calls → Calls from ads using call extensions or call-only ads" conversion exists. Google usually creates it automatically — check before making a duplicate.
  2. Open the conversion action's settings. Set the call length threshold: calls longer than this count as conversions. For most service businesses, 60–90 seconds filters out wrong numbers and spam. Emergency verticals (towing, locksmiths) can go shorter; consultative sales (remodeling, legal) should go 2–3 minutes.
  3. Set "Count" to One (not Every) — you don't want one caller dialing back twice to count as two leads.
  4. Go to Campaigns → Assets → + → Call, enter your real business number, and apply at the account or campaign level. Google swaps in the forwarding number automatically when the ad serves.
  5. Set a schedule on the asset if nobody answers after hours — paying for calls that hit voicemail is pure waste.

One wrinkle: the number shown is Google's forwarding number, not yours. Some callers save it and call it back weeks later (it keeps working for a while, so you still get the call). If a persistent branded number matters — truck decals, directories — use a third-party tracking number as your asset number instead and accept slightly less native reporting.

Layer 2: Call-Only Ads (Call-Focused Search Ads)

Call assets attach to regular text ads. Call-only ads (now built as responsive search ads with a call asset and "call-focused" setup) are designed so the entire ad is a phone call: the headline click dials your number instead of visiting your site.

When to use them:

  • Emergency services — nobody with water pouring through their ceiling wants to read a landing page.
  • High call-to-close rates — if your team books 40% of qualified calls, every click diverted to a form is a leak.
  • Mobile-heavy queries — "near me" service searches skew 70–90% mobile.

When to avoid them: high-consideration purchases (remodeling, legal, medical elective) where people need to research before calling, and any business whose phone handling is weak. Call-only ads amplify your phone operation — great or terrible, whichever it is. If you're weighing cost per lead across formats, the good CPC benchmarks post has the click-cost context.

Layer 3: Website Call Tracking (Calls After the Click)

Call assets only capture calls made directly from the ad. But a large share of callers click the ad, scan your landing page, then dial the number on the site. Without website call tracking, those conversions are invisible.

Google's native solution is dynamic number insertion: a snippet on your site detects visitors arriving from Google Ads and swaps your displayed phone number for a Google forwarding number tied to their click.

Setup: Website Call Conversion

  1. Go to Tools → Conversions → Summary → New conversion action → Phone calls → Calls to a phone number on your website.
  2. Enter your business number exactly as it appears on your site — the snippet finds and replaces that string. If your site shows (904) 341-5986 but you enter 904-341-5986, the swap fails silently.
  3. Set the same call-length threshold logic as your call-asset conversion, and set Count to One.
  4. Install the Google tag (gtag.js) sitewide if it isn't already, plus the phone snippet the setup wizard generates. If you use Google Tag Manager, deploy it as a custom HTML tag firing on all pages.
  5. Test: click your own ad (or append ?gclid=test123 to your URL), confirm the displayed number changes to a forwarding number, then call it and confirm the conversion records.

Third-party platforms (CallRail, CallTrackingMetrics, WhatConverts) do the same job with call recording, transcription, and keyword-level pools. Worth it if you need recordings for sales coaching or multi-channel attribution; overkill if you just need Google's basics. Either way, don't run both systems with overlapping conversion imports — duplicate counting is worse than no counting.

Layer 4: Offline Conversion Imports (The Layer That Changes Everything)

Everything above counts calls. It doesn't count customers. Google's algorithm can't tell a 90-second wrong number from a 90-second booked $8,000 job — unless you tell it. Offline conversion imports close the loop: after your team qualifies the call and (later) closes the job, you upload that outcome back to Google, tied to the original click via the GCLID captured when the ad was clicked.

Setup: The Practical Version

  1. Capture the GCLID. Enable auto-tagging (account settings — it's on by default). Add a hidden field to your website forms that stores the gclid URL parameter, and have whoever answers the phone log caller details in your CRM against the call record from your tracking platform (which stores the GCLID with the call).
  2. Create the offline conversion action: Tools → Conversions → New conversion action → Import → Manual data upload. Name it by the outcome — "Qualified call," "Booked job," "Closed revenue" — with a value if you track job revenue.
  3. Upload on a schedule. Weekly CSV uploads (Google provides a template: GCLID, conversion name, conversion time, value) work fine for most local businesses. Larger operations automate it via the Google Ads API or a CRM integration (HubSpot, Salesforce, and ServiceTitan all have native or connector-based syncs).
  4. Feed it to bidding. Once the import accumulates 30+ conversions a month, include the offline action in your campaign's conversion goals. Now smart bidding chases booked jobs, not phone rings. This is the single biggest upgrade available to a mature lead-gen account — and the prerequisite for trusting broad match or Performance Max with real budgets.

Mind the clock: uploads must reference the original click time, and GCLIDs expire after 90 days. A 60-day sales cycle is fine; a 6-month one needs value-based adjustments instead.

Call Tracking Mistakes That Corrupt Your Data

  • Counting every call as a conversion. A 12-second wrong number is not a lead. Set call-length thresholds and review the call details report monthly against reality.
  • Double-counting. If GA4 imports a "call" event AND the Google Ads call conversion fires, one phone call becomes two conversions and Target CPA thinks it's winning. Pick one source per call type.
  • No after-hours plan. Calls to voicemail convert at a fraction of live answers. Schedule call assets to your staffed hours or use an answering service — the LSA ranking system punishes missed calls the same way.
  • Ignoring the recordings/reasons data. The "Call details" report (and recordings if you use a third-party platform) show why people call. We regularly find 20–30% of call volume is existing customers, solicitors, or job seekers — all fixable with negatives, ad copy, and IVR routing.

FAQ: Google Ads Call Tracking

How do I track phone calls from Google Ads?

Three layers: call assets with a Google forwarding number capture calls made directly from the ad; website call tracking (dynamic number insertion) captures calls from visitors who clicked the ad then dialed the number on your site; offline conversion imports report which calls became customers.

What is a Google forwarding number?

A temporary phone number Google displays in place of your real number on ads and for ad-driven site visitors. It routes to your actual line and logs call duration, timing, and the campaign, ad group, and keyword that produced the call.

What call length should count as a conversion?

For most local service businesses, 60–90 seconds filters out wrong numbers and spam while keeping real inquiries. Emergency services can go shorter; consultative sales (legal, remodeling) should use 2–3 minutes. Validate against your actual call recordings quarterly.

Call assets vs. call-only ads — what's the difference?

A call asset adds a phone number or call button to a standard text ad — the headline still clicks through to your site. A call-only ad makes the entire ad a tap-to-call action. Use call-only for emergency and mobile-heavy services; use call assets when visitors benefit from seeing the landing page first.

What are offline conversion imports?

Uploads that report post-call outcomes (qualified lead, booked job, revenue) back to Google Ads, matched to the original click via GCLID. They let smart bidding optimize toward customers instead of phone rings, and require uploads within 90 days of the click.
