Google Ads CTR Benchmarks by Industry (2026): What's a Good Click-Through Rate?

"What's a good CTR?" is the first question every business owner asks about their Google Ads account — and the answer is always "compared to what?" A 3% click-through rate is excellent for an attorney and mediocre for a plumber's brand campaign. Context is everything: network, industry, keyword intent, and ad position all move the number.

Below: the 2026 search network CTR benchmarks we use when auditing accounts (from Media Spearhead's managed-account data across local service verticals), what actually counts as good for your situation, and the seven fixes that move a lagging CTR.

What CTR Is (and What It Isn't)

Click-through rate is clicks divided by impressions: the percentage of people who saw your ad and clicked it. It's a relevance signal, not a performance goal. CTR tells you whether your ad matches what searchers want — and it feeds directly into expected CTR, one of the three Quality Score components that determine what you pay per click.

What CTR is not: a measure of profitability. A clickbait ad can double your CTR while cutting your conversion rate in half. Judge CTR as a diagnostic for ad-to-query fit, and judge the account on cost per conversion.

2026 Google Ads CTR Benchmarks by Industry (Search Network)

These ranges come from Media Spearhead's 2026 managed-account benchmarks — typical account-level CTRs for search campaigns across the local service and professional verticals we manage, cross-checked against published industry studies. Numbers reflect non-brand keywords in healthy accounts:

  • Legal (personal injury, family, criminal): 4–6%. High stakes drive research behavior; searchers compare multiple ads before clicking.
  • HVAC: 5–8%. Emergency queries ("AC repair near me") click fast and high; installation queries sit lower.
  • Plumbing: 5–8%. Same emergency dynamic — a burst pipe doesn't comparison-shop.
  • Roofing: 4–7%. Storm-season spikes push CTR up; replacement research queries are slower.
  • Home services general (cleaning, pest control, landscaping, handyman): 4–8%. Wide range because intent quality varies more here than in emergency trades.
  • Dental and medical: 3–6%. Elective procedures involve research; emergency dental behaves like emergency trades.
  • Auto repair: 4–6%.
  • Real estate: 4–8%.
  • B2B services: 2–4%. Longer consideration, more research-driven search behavior, lower urgency.
  • E-commerce (search, non-brand): 2–4%. Shopping ads pull the high-intent clicks.

The cross-industry search network average sits around 3–6% for well-run accounts. Brand campaigns are a different universe — 15–30%+ is normal because the searcher already wanted you. Display network CTR is a different universe in the other direction: 0.3–0.6% is typical and fine, because display is interruption, not intent. Never compare search CTR to display CTR.

What's a "Good" CTR for Your Account? 4 Qualifiers

1. Position Normalizes Everything

Top-of-page ads naturally earn higher CTR than ads in position 4. Google knows this — expected CTR (the Quality Score input) is judged relative to position, so a 4% CTR in position 1 can be a worse signal than 3% in position 3. Don't chase raw CTR; chase CTR that's strong for the position you're buying.

2. Keyword Intent Matters More Than Industry

"Emergency plumber near me" should pull 8–12% CTR in a healthy account. "How much does a repipe cost" — a research query — might run 2–3% and still be worth buying if the leads close. Segment your CTR analysis by intent tier before concluding anything is broken.

3. Match Type Skews the Baseline

Exact match keywords on tight queries produce the highest CTRs. Broad match deliberately enters more marginal auctions, so account CTR drops even while cost per conversion improves. If your CTR fell after a broad-match rollout, check conversions before panicking — the tradeoff is often correct.

4. Your Trend Beats Any Benchmark

The most useful CTR comparison is you vs. you, quarter over quarter, segmented by campaign. A steady decline in a stable campaign means ad fatigue, new competition, or a relevance problem. An account beating its own baseline is healthier than one matching an industry average.

7 Fixes That Move a Low CTR

  1. Put the query's core term in headline 1. The single highest-leverage change. "Water Heater Repair — Same-Day Service" beats "Jacksonville's Trusted Plumbers" for the query "water heater repair." Mirror the search, then differentiate.
  2. Split bloated ad groups. If an ad group mixes "AC repair," "AC installation," and "HVAC maintenance," no single ad can be relevant to all three. Single-intent ad groups let the ad match the query exactly.
  3. Use every relevant asset. Sitelinks, callouts, structured snippets, call assets, location assets, and price assets expand your ad's footprint. Bigger ads get clicked more, and asset presence feeds Ad Rank directly.
  4. Add a number or a specific. "24/7 Emergency Service — Answered in 60 Seconds" outperforms "Fast Reliable Service." Specifics signal competence; adjectives signal nothing.
  5. Write to the searcher's moment. Emergency queries want speed and availability. Research queries want price guidance and credibility. Review queries want proof. One generic ad can't serve all three moments.
  6. Prune dead-weight keywords. Keywords with thousands of impressions and sub-1% CTR drag down expected CTR for their whole ad group. Pause, restructure, or rewrite around them.
  7. Tighten negatives. Ads shown to the wrong searches don't get clicked — and every unclicked impression dilutes CTR. A weekly search terms review with new negatives, per our negative keywords guide, steadily concentrates impressions on queries that actually fit.

When a Low CTR Is Actually Fine

Three situations where low CTR shouldn't trigger a rewrite. First, deliberate qualification: an ad that says "From $4,500" filters out budget shoppers on purpose — lower CTR, higher lead quality, better economics. Second, broad match exploration: early-phase broad campaigns show weak CTR while the algorithm maps query territory. Third, hyper-competitive head terms: position 3 on "personal injury lawyer" at 2.5% CTR can still be your most profitable keyword. The metric that settles every one of these debates is cost per conversion — and if you're not sure yours is competitive, the Google Ads ROI benchmarks put it in context.

If CTR is low and conversions are weak, the problem is usually upstream: wrong keywords, wrong message match, or a landing page problem masquerading as an ad problem. Our keyword research tool and CPC checker are the fastest way to sanity-check whether you're even buying the right auctions.

FAQ: Google Ads CTR Benchmarks

What is a good CTR for Google Ads in 2026?

For search campaigns on non-brand keywords, 3–6% is a healthy cross-industry range, with legal and home services often running 4–8%. Brand campaigns should hit 15–30%+. Display network CTR of 0.3–0.6% is normal and not comparable to search.

What is the average CTR on the Google search network?

Across industries, well-run search accounts average roughly 3–6% CTR on non-brand keywords. Emergency-service verticals (plumbing, HVAC, locksmith) skew higher at 5–8%, while B2B and e-commerce search sit at 2–4%.

Why is my Google Ads CTR so low?

The usual causes: generic ad copy that doesn't mirror the query, bloated ad groups mixing multiple intents, missing ad assets, dead-weight keywords dragging down the group, and weak negative keyword coverage showing your ad on irrelevant searches. Position matters too — compare CTR within position, not in the raw.

Does a higher CTR lower my costs?

Indirectly, yes. CTR relative to position feeds expected CTR, one of the three Quality Score components. Higher Quality Score improves Ad Rank, which means better positions at lower actual CPCs. Improving a keyword's Quality Score from 4 to 7 commonly cuts CPC by 20–30%.

Is a low CTR always bad?

No. Ads that qualify searchers with pricing ("From $4,500") intentionally trade CTR for lead quality. Broad match campaigns run lower CTR while exploring new queries. And position-3 ads on hyper-competitive head terms can be highly profitable at 2–3% CTR. Judge on cost per conversion, not CTR alone.
